TruPrevent Review
May 14, 2005 - Part II
by Andrew Cooper
Working with the program
Panda TruPrevent is not a light application in terms of memory consumption - it eats up around 40 megabytes, through its 7 separate processes. On the bright side, though, it doesn't cause a strain to the central processor.
Ok, when it comes to testing how it works, how do we go about it?
For that, I have once again copied the folder of viruses, Trojans, and all the other malware I was given to a backup folder and attempted to launch them from there. (Warning: don't try this at home, uhhm, at least not on a "real" system - I use a VMware Workstation to simulate such dangerous operations in a safe, "virtual" environment.)
I ran virus and Trojan programs one by one, and for most of them was warned by TruPrevent's slide-up alert windows that the application had blocked the launching of a malicious program, which is then deleted from the hard drive.
I was really impressed with the outcome. It only let roughly one in ten instances activate on the computer, making a malware catch ratio of about 90 percent. Now, relatively speaking, I only attempted to launch a small amount of malware, which of course can't fully uncover the program's potential, nor can it explicitly reflect the program's true performance, but considering that TP is a secondary, complementary program, the results were indeed impressive.
In my next article I'm going to give another program, PrevX, a shot. PrevX is one of TP's major competitors in this new technology, and is a prevention tool of the same class.
Verdict
A good program that can provide quite a satisfactory level of protection against the latest malware threats. On the negative side, I would just mention the program's voracious appetite for memory.
