Personal firewalls Support Comparison

June 4, 2002

Introduction

We have already discussed the essential features of today's personal firewalls. If a firewall protects against all leak tests, makes your user's computer invisible to others on the Internet and provides several privacy features this firewall is worth using. But there is yet another factor all users should consider when choosing a firewall as well as any other software. This factor is a product Support level.

So PC Flank decided to compare how prompt support answers are and how well support specialists solve users problems.

We have registered several email accounts at free mail servers to spoof the real source and then tried to get an answer on the following question:

"Hello, after I installed your firewall my web-browser cannot connect to web-sites. But when I exit the firewall my browser is able to connect. What settings should I change to solve the problems?"

As a result we simulated a real problem like a newbie firewall user has forbidden his browser to access the Net but somehow he forgot how he did it. As this particular problem seems really easy to solve for any support specialist we expected prompt and precise answers.
